When it was built, the road went up over a hill and curved sharply. Even when horses were the main transportation, people would roll to their death after falling off the curve. Cars only made it worse. Hundreds died on this road. It was so dangerous that in 1969, the State of Ohio straightened the road out and made it into a four lane highway. There was a ribbon cutting and everything. But in October of that year, five teenagers were driving down the road when a green Roadrunner came flying at them at over 100 mph. Five people died in the crash. Only one survived. Since then, the road, which should be safe, has taken almost a hundred of victims. Ever since that wreck, some creepy stuff has been happening. A faceless hitchhiker has been seen along the road between 1:20 and 1:40am. It is said that he will jump out at passing cars, causing them to stop, and then he will jump up and chase people down the road. A green Roadrunner has also been seen driving along the road, or parked beside the road. One time, some girls who had heard the stories saw a Roadrunner parked on the road. They stopped and got into the car, and took some pictures. When they developed the pictures, a ghost hunter they were friends with saw them and realized that they license plate number was the same as that of the Roadrunner that had killed those teenagers in 69.
Every book or article we read about it was packed full of warnings to avoid the road between 1:20 and 1:40. It is very seriously dangerous, and there have been multiple reports of the faceless man. It's on the list of the world's most haunted roads: http://listverse.com/2009/10/29/10-roads-that-will-scare-you-stupid/
So of course we had to visit.
We started out our first serious night of hunting at Walmart, getting some gear: super effective flashlights and awesome spirit animal shirts. We stopped at home to get the rest of our supplies.
We then hit up iHop for a little pregame.
Dead Man's Curve is supposed to be right at the junction of 125 and 222. We headed out on 222. About halfway there, we drove through a whole lot of really thick smoke, but there was no fire anywhere. The back roads are all really dark and curvy. After about a 25 minute drive...we arrived in Bethel. We parked in a nearby parking lot across from a very dismal looking house. Holly really wanted to go break into it. However, there was a police cruiser parked nearby so we decided this might not be the night for a B&E. We waited for some time, then decided to spend the remainder of our time at a nearby Walmart parking lot. We are fans of Walmart.
While waiting in the nearby Walmart parking lot we noticed something very strange. Even though it was past 1am on a Friday morning, this Walmart was very busy. The first thing we saw was a mother with a shopping cart with her small child. Who grocery shops with their child at 1am? Only a few seconds later we saw another mother and father with a baby leaving Walmart! A few minutes after that, a bizarre truck entered the parking lot. As it neared a cart, it started slowing down to about 1 or 2 mph. It purposefully, slowly, ran into the cart. These occurrences were very strange to us, even cult like, especially so late.
As the clock struck 1:18 we headed out of Walmart parking lot toward Dead Man's Curve. At 1:20 we turned onto the curve. About 30 feet into the curve, it became very very dark. We saw no hitchhiker, but we definitely felt something eerie. We drove to the end of dead man's curve, turned around, and headed back the opposite way, in the total darkness. Once again, no faceless hitchhiker was seen, but needless to say, the road itself did scare us silly.
So we didn't die...this time. But this is just the beginning. Here's some pictures from our adventure. You can form your own opinions about what's in them....
